Product Specification & Summary

Among Bangladeshi poets Rafiq Azad (1943-2016) stands out for his unwavering commitment to the “craft or sullen art” of versification, a phrase coined by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Rafiq Azad was very much in the mainstream of the tradition of modern Bengali poetry in Bangladesh, which, after a fitful beginning in the 1940s, was set on firm footing by Shamsur Rahman, Al Mahmud and Shaheed Quaderi. For over five decades, Azad had single-mindedly built up a substantial oeuvre that ranges over the perennial themes of poetry as well as the contingencies of our socio-political arena. On his arrival in Dhaka from the suburbs in the culturally vibrant sixties, he quickly acquired a reputation as an enfant terrible and was a key figure in the “Sad Generation” movement, a coterie of angry young men that included both poets and fiction writers. Azad never lost the rebelliousness of those early years, and refreshingly, never missed an opportunity to épater le bourgeois. At the same time, he had proved himself capable of sober – and even sombre – meditations on present day realities, notably in numerous poems on our threatened environment. Whatever the subject or tone of his poetry, Azad always wrote with admirable command over prosody. Translation is always a tricky business. The question of how much is lost in translation from one language to another always comes up in the discussion on poetry, but we should never forget that all would be lost if there were no translations at all.
