মােজাফফর আহমদ প্রায় পঞ্চাশ বছর (১৯৫৭–২০০৪) ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগ ও ব্যবসায় প্রশাসন ইনস্টিটিউটে অধ্যাপনা করেছেন। শিক্ষাজীবনে এ দেশের স্কুল-কলেজ পেরিয়ে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, সরবাের্ন (প্যারিস), শিকাগাে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অর্থনীতিসহ সমাজবিজ্ঞান ও বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে পড়াশােনা এবং বিভিন্ন দেশের নানা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শিক্ষকতা করেছেন। জাতিসংঘের নানা সংস্থাসহ জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক বিভিন্ন প্রতিষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিলেন। পাশাপাশি বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে পঞ্চাশ বছর ধরেই লেখালেখি করেছেন। তাঁর বেশির ভাগ বই দেশের বাইরে বিভিন্ন সংগঠনের উদ্যোগে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। প্রকাশিত গ্রন্থের মধ্যে যৌথভাবে রচিত পাবলিক এন্টারপ্রাইজ ইন অ্যান ইন্টারমিডিয়েট রেজিম ব্যাপক পাঠকপ্রিয়তা পেয়েছিল এবং বিভিন্ন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সহযােগী পাঠ হিসেবে গৃহীত হয়েছিল। তাঁর গবেষণার বিষয় বিস্তৃত ও বহুমাত্রিক। রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞান, সমাজবিজ্ঞানসহ প্রধানত অর্থনীতির শাখা-প্রতিশাখায় তিনি লিখেছেন। সাম্প্রতিক কালে শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য, মানবাধিকার, সুশাসন, দুর্নীতি প্রতিরােধ, পরিবেশ ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে নানা কাজ, গবেষণা ও লেখালেখিতে ব্যাপৃত রয়েছেন।
