পুরো নাম হারবার্ট জর্জ ওয়েলস। বৃটিশ। জন্ম ১৮৬৬ সালের ২১ সেপ্টেম্বর। কমার্শিয়াল এ্যাকাডেমিতে লেখাপড়া করেন ১৩ বছর বয়স পর্যন্ত। সার্টিফিকেট নেন বুক-কিপিং অর্থাৎ পদ্ধতিমাফিক হিসাব রাখার বিদ্যায়। ১৮৮০তে শিক্ষানবিসি করেন উইন্ডসরের এক বস্ত্ৰ-ব্যবসায়ীর কাছে। ঐ বছরেই ছাত্র-শিক্ষক ছিলেন সমারসেটের একটি স্কুলে। ১৮৮০-৮১তে শিক্ষানবিস কেমিস্ট ছিলেন সাসেক্সে। ১৮৮১-৮৩ তে শিক্ষানবিস বস্ত্ৰ-ব্যবসায়ী ছিলেন হ্যাম্পশায়ারের হাইড্রস এম্পেরিয়ামে। ১৮৮৩-৮৪তে ছাত্র-সহকারী ছিলেন মিডহাস্টগ্রামার স্কুলে। ১৮৮৪-৮৭তে পড়াশুনা করেন লন্ডনের রয়াল কলেজ অফ সায়ানেস-কিন্তু উত্তীর্ণ হতে পারেন নি পরীক্ষায়। শিক্ষকতা করেন ১৮৮৭-৮৮ সালে রেক্সহ্যামের হােল্ট এ্যাকাডেমিতে এবং ১৮৮৮-৮৯ সালে লন্ডনের হেনলি হাউস স্কুলে। ১৮৯০তে বি. এসসি ডিগ্রি পান ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ লন্ডন থেকে। দুই বিয়ে। প্রথম বিবাহ হয়। চাচাতো বোন ইসাবেল মেরি ওয়েলসের সঙ্গে ১৮৯১ সালে—বিবাহবিচ্ছেদ ঘটে ১৮৯৫-তে। ঐ বছরেই দ্বিতীয় বিবাহ হয় এ্যামি ক্যাথরিন রবিন্সের সঙ্গে। দ্বিতীয় স্ত্রী মারা যান ১৯২৭ সালে। দুই পুত্র। লেখক এ্যান্টনি ওয়েস্টও তাঁর পুত্ৰ-মা ছিলেন লেখিকা রেবেকা ওয়েস্ট। ১৮৯১-৯২তে শিক্ষকতা করেন লন্ডনের ইউনিভার্সিটি টিউটােরিয়াল কলেজে। পুরো সময়ের লেখক হন। ১৮৯৩ সাল থেকে। ১৯২২ এবং ১৯২৩-এ ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ লন্ডনের পক্ষে পার্লামেন্টের লেবার নির্বাচনপ্রার্থী হন। ১৯০৩ থেকে ১৯০৮ পর্যন্ত ছিলেন ফেবিয়ান সোসাইটির সদস্য। ১৯৩৬-এ ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ লন্ডন থেকে পান ডক্টরেট অফ লিটারেচার সম্পমান। লন্ডনের ইম্পিরিয়েল কলেজ অফ সায়েন্স এ্যান্ড টেকনলজির সম্পমানজনক সদস্যপদে থাকার পর দেহাবসান ঘটে ১৯৪৬ সালের ১৩ আগস্ট।
