এদেশের সাহিত্যে ষাটের দশক নিয়ে যে-কোনাে বিবেচনার ক্ষেত্রেই অনিবার্যভাবে যাদের নাম উঠে আসবে, জ্যোতিপ্রকাশ দত্ত তাঁদের অন্যতম। অন্যতমই শুধু নয়, ব্যতিক্রমীও। সমগ্র বাংলা সাহিত্যের বিচারেই। জ্যোতিপ্রকাশ দত্ত-র জন্ম ১৯৩৯ সালে কুষ্টিয়ার আমলাবাড়িতে, মাতুলালয়ে। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বাংলায় স্নাতক (সম্মান) ও স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রি লাভের পর সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ থেকে ডিপ্লোমাও অর্জন করেন। ১৯৬৯-এ উচ্চশিক্ষার্থে চলে যান মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে এবং সেখানেই গণযােগাযােগে এমএস ও সাংবাদিকতায় পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। কর্মজীবনের শুরু ঢাকায়, বাংলা একাডেমিতে। সেখান থেকে যান বাংলাদেশ অবজারভার-এ। মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বিভিন্ন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অধ্যাপনা ও জনসংযােগ/ সম্পাদনার পেশায় কেটেছে দীর্ঘকাল। শেষের আট বছর বিশ্ববিখ্যাত প্রকাশক জন ওয়াইলি অ্যান্ড সন্স পাবলিশার্স-এ। আটাশ বছর বিদেশবাসের পর দেশে ফিরে বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম বৃহৎ এনজিও প্রশিকা'-র তথ্য পরিচালক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ঢাকার ইস্ট ওয়েস্ট ইউনিভার্সিটিতে যােগাযােগ ও তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি বিভাগেও খণ্ডকালীন প্রফেসর ছিলেন, একইসঙ্গে।। বাংলা ছােটগল্পে অবদানের জন্যে বাংলা একাডেমি পুরস্কার লাভ করেছেন তিনি সাহিত্যসাধনার প্রথম জীবনেই প্রায় (১৯৭১)। ভাষা ও সাহিত্যে সর্বোচ্চ রাষ্ট্রীয় সম্মান একুশে পদক পেলেন ২০১৬ সালে ।
