When Mira Sharma, a young Indian woman in Nairobi, is suddenly widowed, she learns to fend for herself and her young daughter Shanti. In the aftermath of an attempted coup by the military, her late husband's assets are frozen, and Mira is left with no income and a daughter to support in the swirl of political turmoil. Burdened with memories of the past and unable to overcome her vulnerability, Mira succumbs to depression, giving over the care of Shanti to others.
Shanti's primary caregiver is the housekeeper Wairimu, who has her own complicated status in the evolving political and social climate. As the power dynamics grow more complicated, these three women must finally confront their turbulent history and equivocal present in order to chart out their futures.
