Product Specification & Summary

"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" Taken from the last flap of the book:
Mark Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn' (1884) was probably the first novel to deal with the quintessential American literary theme of the conflict between individual freedom and social conformity. The drifting journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, down the Mississippi River on their raft may be one of the most enduring images of escape and freedom in all of American literature.
Written during the post-Civil War period when there was an intense white reaction against the black, the novel is also famous for its biting criticism of racism in American society. However, it has recently been subject to sharp criticism because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and frequent use of the racial slur "nigger" that underpines Twain's inability to fully rise above the stereotypes of black people that white readers of his era expected and enjoyed. Apart from these aspects, the novel is also noted for its multiple styles, genres, narrative techniques and use of vernacular language.
