Mahbub Ullah,/b> was born on December 9, 1945 in village Tiahazra in the district of Noakhall, He has gathered wealth of experience in his life throught political activism, staying underground to avoid police arrest, sharing food and lodge with agraicultural labourers, imprisonment, writing dispatches for newspapers, teaching in the university and doing research in centres fof excellence. No other academician in Bangladesh is likely to match him in the capacity to combine sophistication of knowledge with experience gathered from the dust of real life.
Mahbub Ullah was elected Geneal Secretary of East Pakistan Students' Union in 1967. He was one of the leaders of the upsurge of students and masses against the autocratic rule of Ayub Khan in 1969. He was convicted to rigorous imprisonment for declaring the programme of 'Independet People's Democraic East Bengal' on 22nd February 1970 at Paltan Maidan by a summary military court. He was released from prison on December 17, 1971, the day following the surrender of Pakistan army at Dhaka after suffering imprisonment for 22 months, which include the whole period of the war of liberation. As a political activist he had close relations with Maulan Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.
