হ্যান্স ক্রিশ্চিয়ান অ্যান্ডারসেন ১৮০৫ সালের ২ এপ্রিল, ডেনমার্কের ওডেন্সে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন । সর্বকালের জন্য সব দেশের জন্য আদর্শ শিশুসাহিত্যিক হিসেবে খ্যাত । শিশুদের জন্য অসাধারণ সব রূপকথা লিখেছেন তিনি । এ জন্য তাঁকে রূপকথার জাদুকর বলা হয় । তিনি দেড় শতাধিক ‘ফোক টেলস', ‘ফেইরি টেলস' বা ‘রূপকথা’ লিখেছেন । কল্পনার ডানায় ভর করে এবং মানবিক অনুভূতি ও জীবনের নানা অনুষঙ্গ টেনে এনে তিনি তাঁর গল্পকথা সাজিয়েছেন । হ্যান্স ক্রিশ্চিয়ান অ্যান্ডারসেন তাঁর ছেলেবেলার পূর্বস্মৃতি থেকে গল্পের উপাদান বেছে নিয়ে নিজের রূপকথার গল্পগুলো লিখেছেন । জন্মভূমি ডেনমার্কের ওডেন্সে তাঁর বাবা-মা, দাদি আর শহরের অন্যসব লোকজন (এর মধ্যে দাদি যেখানে কাজ করতেন, সেই মানসিক চিকিৎসালয় ও আশ্রমের লোকেরাও ছিল) তাঁকে নানারকম রূপকথা আর লোককথা শোনাত প্রাণভরে । এ ছাড়াও তিনি ডেনমার্কের ইতিহাস আর বিদেশি সাহিত্য থেকেও গল্প লেখার উপাদান খুঁজে পেয়েছেন । নিজের বিশাল কল্পনাশক্তি আর অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে গল্প লেখার ক্ষমতায় অ্যান্ডারসেন অল্পদিনের মধ্যেই এমন প্রবাদপুরুষে পরিণত হলেন যে, আজকের পৃথিবীতেও তিনি অমর হয়ে আছেন । গল্পগুলো ডেনমার্কের ভাষায় প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয় ১৮৩৫ সালে, আর ইংরেজি ভাষায় ১৮৪৬ সালে । হ্যান্স ক্রিশ্চিয়ান অ্যান্ডারসেন ৭০ বছর বয়সে ১৮৭৫ সালের ৪ আগস্ট ডেনমার্কের কোপেনহেগেনে মারা যান।
