ড. ইসমাঈল রাজী আল ফারুকী একজন মুসলিম দার্শনিক ও তুলনামূলক ধর্মতত্ত্ববিদ। জন্ম ১৯২১ সালের ১ জানুয়ারী ফিলিস্তিনের জাফফা শহরে। পিতা ছিলেন আবুল আল-হুদা আল-ফারুকী। পিতাও একজন স্কলার ছিলেন ফলে তিনি প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা ও ধর্মীয় শিক্ষা পিতার কাছ থেকেই গ্রহণ করেন। ১৯৪৮ সালে ইসরাইল প্রতিষ্ঠা হলে তিনি লেবাননের বৈরুতে হিজরত করেন। সেখানে আমিরিকান ইউনিভার্সিটি অব বৈরুতে অধ্যয়ন করেন। ১৯৪৯ সালে তিনি দর্শনের উপরে এম.এ ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। ১৯৫১ সালে তিনি পুনরায় হারভার্ড ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে দর্শনের উপরে এম এ ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। এ সময়ে তার থিসিস ছিল – Justifying the Good: Metaphysics and Epistemology of Value। ১৯৫২ সালে ইন্ডিয়ানা ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে পি.এইচ.ডি ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। মিশরের আল-আযহারে ১৯৫৪ থেকে ১৯৫৮ সাল পর্যন্ত অধ্যয়ন করেন। ১৯৫৮ সালে তিনি কানাডার McGill University তে খ্রিস্টান ও ইহুদি ধর্মের উপরে তুলনামূলক অধ্যয়ন করার জন্য ভর্তি হন। McGill University তে অধ্যয়নকালে তিনি পাকিস্থানের বিখ্যাত মুসলিম দার্শনিক ফজলুর রহমানের সাথে পরিচিত হন এবং পাকিস্তানে আসেন, করাচিতে “Central Institute of Islamic Research” এ কর্মে নিযুক্ত হন। এ সময়ে তিনি অনেকবার বাংলাদেশও সফর করেছেন। তৎকালীন সময়ে তার অনেক আর্টিকেল বাংলায় ইসলামিক একাডেমি পত্রিকায় ছাপা হয়। সম্ভবত ১৯৮০ সালে সর্বশেষ তিনি ঢাকায় এসেছিলেন একটি সেমিনারে অংশগ্রহণ করতে। ১৯৬৩ সালে তিনি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের University of Chicago-তে ভিজিটিং প্রফেসর হিসাবে জয়েন করেন। তিনি Syracuse University ও Temple University তে ধর্মতত্ত্ব বিভাগে অধ্যাপনা করেন ইসলামিক স্টাডিজ বিভাগ প্রতিষ্ঠা ১৯৮৬ সালের ২৭ মার্চ এই মহান দার্শনিক তার পেন্সিলভেনিয়ার নিজ বাসায় সন্ত্রাসীদের ছুরিকাঘাতে নির্মমভাবে শহীদ হন। আল-ফারুকী ছিলেন জ্ঞানের ইসলামীকরণ (Islamization of knowledge) তত্ত্বের প্রবক্তা ও International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) এর অন্যতম প্রতিষ্ঠাতা। তিনি ১০০টিরও বেশি আর্টিকেল ও ২৫টি বই রচনা করেছেন। তার সবচেয়ে বিখ্যাত বই – Christian Ethics: A Historical and Systematic Analysis of Its Dominant Ideas।
