স্যার যদুনাথ সরকারের (১০.১২.১৮৭০-১৯.৫.১৯৫৮) জন্ম রাজশাহী জেলার করচ মারিয়ায় । ভারতবর্ষের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ ঐতিহাসিক । ইংরেজি ভাষায় লেখা তাঁর গবেষণা কর্মগুলি পণ্ডিত মহলে সমাদৃত। বাংলায়ও তিনি বহু সংখ্যক প্রবন্ধ লিখেছেন । ইতিহাস বিষয়ক প্রবন্ধসমূহ তার মধ্যে অন্যতম । ইংরেজি সাহিত্যের অধ্যাপক। হিসাবে যদুনাথ কর্মক্ষেত্রে প্রবেশ করেছিলেন । ভাষা ও সহিত্যেও তাঁর ছিল অগাধ জ্ঞান । ‘সমকালে প্রকাশিত বেশ কিছু বাংলা ইতিহাস গ্রন্থের যে আলােচনা তিনি করেছেন তার থেকে মাতৃভাষায় ইতিহাস চর্চার প্রসারে তার আগ্রহ ও উৎসাহ বােঝা যায়। জীবনের নানা দিকে অবারিত কৌতুহলের পূর্ণাঙ্গ প্রতিফলন দেখা যায় তার রচনায় ।। ১৮৯১ খ্রি. প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজ থেকে ইংরেজি ও ইতিহাসে অনার্স-সহ বি.এ. এবং ১৮৯২ খ্রি. ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে প্রথম শ্রেণিতে প্রথম হয়ে। এম.এ. পাশ করেন। ১৮৯৭ খ্রি. প্রেমৰ্চাদ রায়চঁাদ বৃত্তি পান। ১৮৯৮ খ্রি. প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজে অধ্যাপনা শুরু করেন। ১৮৯৯ খ্রি. পাটনা কলেজে বদলি হয়ে ১৯২৬ খ্রি. পর্যন্ত সেখানে ছিলেন। মধ্যে কিছুকাল (১৯১৭-১৯ খ্রি.) কাশী হিন্দু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ইতিহাসে অধ্যাপনা করেন। অধ্যাপক জীবনে বেশিরভাগ সমময় কাটে পাটনা ও কটকে। ১৯১৯-২৩ খ্রি. কটক কলেজের অধ্যাপক ছিলেন। ৪ আগস্ট ১৯২৬ খ্রি. কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভাইস-চ্যান্সেলর হন। কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের তিনিই প্রথম অধ্যাপক ভাইসচ্যান্সেলর ।।
